I'm sure as you read the above scene you more than likely envisioned me feeding the child a bottle that contained infant formula and not a steak and potato meal. Why? Most likely because you understood that I was feeding a new born child and babies have not matured up to the stage of eating solid food. If I wrote the above scene but changed to details to me preparing a meal for my father, you would not imagine me serving my father a bottle. Why? Again because you understand that my father, a grown man, would require heavier food to sustain him. As Christians, the same principles apply to us. After feeding on milk for a while, God expects us to grow and start eating solid food. We cannot remain Christian babies forever.

According to the Word of God, milk symbolizes immaturity and represents a person who does not know the word of God for him or herself. The moment we confessed our sins, accepted Christ as Lord and surrendered our lives to Him, we became Christian babies. At that very moment we are fragile and very dependent on other mature Christians to show us the way in which we should go so we join a Bible-believing church so that our souls can be fed by the undiluted word of God. In addition we ask others to pray for us daily to encourage us in the faith. There is nothing wrong with this beginning stage in our Christian walk. The problem arises when after years of depending on others to teach us the Word, we still are shaky in the very foundational truths of the Word of God. We are told
"For when for the time you ought to be teachers, you have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as need milk, and not solid food"- Hebrews 13:12
We ought to be teachers of the Word of God after years of proclaiming to be followers of Jesus Christ. If we evaluate ourselves and there's no difference in our spiritual maturity over the years, if there's no difference in the way we handle certain temptations or trials, if there's no difference in our attitudes or speech, if there's no distinction between our walk versus the walk of those who don't know Christ, if there's been no change in our fire and desire for the things of God, if we are still confused on elementary Christian truths, then something is terribly wrong. We are still babies, but even worse, there's a chance we have become like the fig tree that Jesus cursed. Why was Jesus so upset that He cursed the fig tree? For starters, the fig tree was matured. Secondly, it was the right season to bear fruits. Lastly, though the age was right and the season was right, the tree behaved like a seed. As a result, Christ saw no need for its existence. God forbid we become grown Christians yet God cannot send us out to the nations to preach the Word to lost souls.
So how do we eat meat? How do we become strong mature Christians? The above Hebrews chapter 5 Scripture tells us that those who eat strong meat are those who exercise their senses to discern between good and evil. In addition, if being a "babe" means you are unskillful in the word of righteousness, than being mature means you are skillful when it comes to God's word therefore in essence, to know what is good and evil, we must know what is written in God's Holy Book. The Bible instructed us
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. "- 2 Timothy 2:15
The secret to maturity in Christ comes with spending time with God because there's no surer way of knowing someone than spending time in their presence. If we dedicate ourselves to studying God's Word, God promises that He will teach us all things and bring all things to our remembrance. (John 14:26). We just have to put in the time. It is not easy, but we are told to crucify the flesh. The more we do the little things such as going to church regularly, being involved at church, keeping godly friendships and relationships, and having personal one-on-one time we God, the easier it will be to start reflecting the Father. Before long our character will reflect godliness (1 Peter 1:16), our speech will be seasoned like salt (Colossians 4:6), and we will find ourselves being a light in a darkened world (Matthew 5:14). God is ready to use us for His glory, but in order to do that, He needs His people to be hungry for strong meat, hungry for truth, hungry for righteousness, and to be ready to go higher in the spiritual realm. God promised that "it shall come to pass afterwards, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions" (Joel 2:28). If you are a son or a daughter, are you prophesying? If you are an old man, are you seeing dreams from God? If you are a young man, do you have God's vision for your life? You can be a vegetarian physically, but this generation needs you to start eating meat spiritually so that you can teach the Word of God whether by word or deeds to those around you at school, at work, or at the grocery store. There's a dying world waiting for you to tap into your spiritual gifts. The Bible tells us that "for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance" (Romans 11:29). This simply means when God has called you to do something, He does not take back His calling; however, it is our responsibility to choose to operate under the calling of God on our lives! God is calling you higher therefore go higher. Spiritual stagnation is not your portion. It is my prayer that when God is passing out the main dish that consists of strong meats, He'll find us ready to eat at His table.
