The Illusion of Freedom

The United States of America will be celebrating its Independence Day on July 4th, but my heart aches for this country because we are living under the illusion of freedom. The news that have plagued this country in the last couple of days is a mere reflection of bondage that the world in general has voluntarily entered. With our own laws we've decreed and have accepted to be slaves to sin. Through the Lord Jesus Christ we have been given dominion over sin (Romans 6:!4), but the world has forfeited that power. I understand the world that does not know the saving grace of Jesus Christ is still a slave to sin, but what I cannot understand is why Christians are still bonded? Christians. Followers of Jesus Christ. Those who identify with the death and the resurrection of Jesus. It is an oxymoron to be Christian and yet be a slave, yet so many of us today have fallen from the faith and we don't even know it! We no longer mirror Christ. There is nothing about the 21st century Christian that screams set apart or different and I begin to wonder, Lord how did we get like this? How did we become a people who no longer reverence Your Word? How did we become lukewarm? The Holy Spirit answered and said I commanded you to" Watch, stand fast in the faith, be courageous, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13), but the people turned a deaf ear to My Words. To experience the liberty God has given us, we must go back to obeying the Word of God.

Watch

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."-Matthew 26:41

So many times in Scripture whenever we are commanded to watch, it is always followed by a command to pray (Matthew 25:13; Mark 13: 33; Mark 14:38; Luke 21:36, etc). Why? Because revelations are given by God through prayer! We cannot watch and be vigilant if we don't know what things to look out for!  Prayer opens up the line of communication where we talk to God and in return He speaks, comforts, instructs, and pre-warns us; however, we've become so distracted and so prayer-less that we can no longer recognize the things that are of God and the things which are not. God has already warned us, "be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8), but because we are not prayerful and because there's no revelation, we mistake the roaring lion as little kitten to play with. We enslave ourselves again with sin and the devil makes us comfortable by telling us that it's "a little sin" or "everyone is doing it". On the contrary, God's Word says the wages of sin, whether big or small, is death. Be watchful! We have to go back to praying and asking for the Holy Spirit of God for the Spirit of God searches all things, even the deep things of God and He is ready to reveal them to us (1 Corinthians 2:10).

Stand Fast in the Faith
"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which is preached unto you, let him be accursed."- Galatians 5:1

The Word of God cannot change. Scripture tells us that heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of God will never pass away (Matthew24:35). Curse is he who distorts the Word of God. We live under the illusion of freedom because we've abandoned Scripture and sound doctrine. While we think we are hearing the Word of God, our churches are only preaching those things which tickle the ears! Pastors no longer preach the undiluted Word of God because they are enslaved to the offering and the tithes a large congregation will bring in. God forbid they preach the part of Scripture which says homosexuality is an abomination before God and fornication and adultery is a sin. Most cannot speak out against these things and call for repentance because they are living in the same sin! So what do they do? They distract you with prosperity messages, beautiful music, flashy lights, and charisma.  Members of the church are enslaved to the lifestyle of the world. They have one foot in the world and the other foot in the church. These are the people too afraid to surrender ALL to Jesus. The Bible says they are  lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, and they have a form of godliness but deny its power. (2 Timothy 3:1-5). We want to just look like a Christian, but we don't want to deny ourselves and follow Christ. "COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM AND BE YE SEPARATE", says the Lord. 'Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters,' says the Lord Almighty." (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). Come out of whatever friendship, lifestyle, association, or ministration that does not align with the Word of the Living God!

Be Courageous, Be Strong
" Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."- Deuteronomy 31:6

There's this unspoken rule indirectly saying that we can only enjoy freedom when we attach ourselves to the majority even when the majority is wrong. That "freedom" is an illusion because the Bible says the truth sets people free! (John 8:32). The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is truth. Be courageous and speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, in love. Do not forfeit your convictions to fit in with this world because Jesus is coming soon. These are the end times prophesied in the Bible. We will be hated by all people for His name sake, we will be persecuted, we will be denied and isolated, we will lose friends, yet in all these situations, we must be strong and courageous for God is with us. It is time to arm ourselves: "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."(Ephesian 6:13-15)

There's no real freedom in this world. Christ alone has called us all to be free: free from this world, free from the opinions of mere mortals, and free from sin. Let us exercise that liberty and stop returning to bondage. God wants His children back and He is making one last desperate plea to the world. " If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14).  Father Lord heal our land, heal our families, and heal us as individuals that we may show forth Your glory in all the earth. Amen.
