What Does God Want From Me?

I remember there was a movie I once watched with Mel Gibson called, "What Women Want." In the movie he accidently received the ability to hear what women were thinking around him and he used this power to his advantage. As I thought about the topic of this blog (What Does God Want From Me) that movie came to mind and that's when I realized that in order to know what God wants from me, I must know His mind. Is it possible to know the Mind of God? If so, what is the mind of God? To answer the first question, yes it is possible to know the mind of God. We are told in Amos 3:7 that, " Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets". To answer the second question, the mind of God is nothing else but His Word revealed in the Holy Scriptures. The Scripture in Proverbs 4:20-22 says, "My son give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh." By searching His Word, I've found that what God wants from me is very simple. God wants Me. Period. We forsake the grace and mercy of salvation when we assume God wants things from us. When we assume God wants things from us, we are inadvertently telling the Lord that we can earn salvation and we can earn His love. We get busy throwing gifts at God in order to earn favor from Him and to get on His good side when the Lord simply only wanted us. The only purpose of our existence is to honor the Lord.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service" -Romans 12:1 (NKJV)

You may be thinking, "But FeeFe, I gave my life to Christ many years ago" to which the Lord is asking, "How much of your life did you give Me?" We have the tendency to only trust God with parts of our lives because we don't truly believe that God can handle us as we are. Some give God their children, but cannot hand God their own hearts. Some trust God for everything, except in the case of finding a life partner. Some give God their hearts in private, but take it back once they reach social media. Some give God their education, but cannot give God their finances. Some give God their homes, but share their bed with devil in sexual immorality.  The Word of God says our reasonable services, what we should do, what is expected of us, is to present ourselves to God, 1) a living sacrifice meaning we are alive yet dying to our flesh and conforming to the image of Christ 2) holy meaning abstaining from sin and 3) acceptable to God meaning doing the things that pleases God even if it makes no sense to men! The Lord wants all of the holy version you with an emphasis on the holy because God cannot accept anything or anyone that is not holy. If we do not recognize this standard of God, even if we are willing to give ourselves in our entirety to God, He cannot accept us with sin. The only time God the Father turned His back on God the Son was when the sins of the world rested upon Jesus Christ on the cross because a Holy God cannot behold iniquity (Matthew 27:46).  Therefore, God has given us the formula to being received when we offer ourselves to Him and that formula is submit, resist, draw, cleanse, and purify. His Word says,

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded"-James 4:7-8

We must give ourselves in totality to the Lord, stay away from the temptations of the devil, and get closer to the Lord by studying and meditating on His Word that we may know His mind. The more of the mind of the Lord that we know, the easier it is for the Holy Spirit within us to convict us when we sin and lead us to repentance and holiness. The Lord wants us and we need to get to the point in our lives where we wholeheartedly surrender to Him. God doesn't want our two hours Sunday visits, He doesn't want the money we splash on church programs and outreach services, and He doesn't want our one-minute prayers over our food. David said, " For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart-- these, O God, You will not despise...Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness" (Psalm 51:16-17;19a). God will reject every other thing we give Him as a substitute for what He truly wants, but if we humble ourselves to Him, He will not reject us. How do I know this? I know His mind. He promised, "all that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out" (John 6:37). God doesn't want anything from you...He wants you.

Today's Memory Verse: 1 Chronicles 21:24

"But King David replied to Araunah, "No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and give it to the LORD. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!" (NLT)
