"Good things come to those that wait."
"Last, but not the least."
I am sure you've heard those phrases before, but have you ever wondered where they originated from? I must admit that I personally have not thought about it until recently when these phrases kept repeating themselves in my heart. There are times in our lives when God just wants us to know that He is saving the best for last. If God has the power to do all things at any moment He desires, why then does He wait until it almost becomes too late before He releases His best? The answer is that there are certain things that must first align themselves, before God releases His best. These things include the condition of your heart, your obedience to God, and God's perfect timing. All of these principles are illustrated perfectly in John Chapter two at the wedding where Jesus performed His first miracle.
"Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine". And Jesus said to her, " Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it".- John 2: 2-5
The Condition of the heart: They ran out of wine before they ran to Christ
God will wait to release His best until He sees our utter and complete dependence and trust in Him alone. He is waiting because we have not yet realized His importance in our lives. It is important to note that Jesus was invited to the wedding and He honored the invitation; however, He was lumped with all the other guests and there was nothing distinguishing Christ from everyone else. In addition, there was no need for Jesus until the good stuff ran out. This is how we live our lives. Once upon a time we said a prayer accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and we invited Christ into our lives. As the great God that He is, Christ entered our lives only to see that we have not created a special space for Him. He is there, but so is our selfish ambitions, our old behaviors, and our old habits that we don't want to get rid of. As long as times are good, we are perfectly okay with merely having Jesus in our lives without having Him there manifesting Himself in all of His glory and power. So God waits. And waits. And waits, until we literally hit rock bottom and start searching for Jesus because we need Him! The purest condition of the heart is found in our desperation for God! The Bible lets us know that if anyone wants to enter the kingdom of God they must come as a child (Matthew 19:14). Jesus says that the kingdom of God "belongs to such as these" in reference to children because children are 100 percent dependent on their parents! They need their parents to provide everything from shelter to food to love. In the same vain we are to be completely dependent on God. God is waiting until we can honestly cry, "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I do hope. my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning-Yes, more than those who watch for the morning" (Psalm 130:5-6).
Obedience to God: Just Do It
Throughout the Bible we see that God delights in having us involved in His work. While works alone will not get you into heaven, the Bible also says that faith without works is dead (James 2:26) meaning while we wait and trust God for His best, we must actively be putting our faith into action. Mary said to the servants at the wedding, "Whatever He says, do it" and the servants obeyed. "Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim" (John 2:7). One of things we must note is that the Word of God says, " All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16) therefore we must note how the servants fill the waterpots; they did not half-way fill the waterpots rather they filled them up to the brim! Filling the waterpots to its maximum capacity shows full obedience to the command of Jesus, not partial obedience! We want God's best but we want to do just enough to get by, just enough to appear/look like a Christian, just enough to say we pray, and just enough to say we go to church, etc. So while God is aware of what we need and it's in His power to release His best, He waits. And waits. And waits, until we start operating at our maximum capacity and like Paul we are able to say, " But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His race toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." (1 Corinthians 15:10).
God's Timing: Last to Set You Apart
God is not a Duplicator. If God is going to give His best to you, He will do it in a manner that is unconventional so that you will be set apart. "And he said to him, " every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!" (John 2:10). It was normal for every wedding to start off with good wine and then finish off with cheap wine therefore when Christ was sought after, He did something that was not the norm. Jesus waited. Yes, He waited "until now!". God waited until the moment where people were not expecting anything good to come out of the wedding! It is when we've been written off that God likes to act! God will wait until it seems like nobody's expecting you to become anything in life! They've counted you as part of the statistics! They've said, like they said about Jesus, "can anything good come out of Nazareth? (John 1:46), not knowing that they've just set the stage of your life for the move of God! The pieces have aligned for God to set you apart. The Bible says that the stone which the builders rejected became the chief cornerstone (Psalm 118:22) and likewise God's timing will make you the new standard. There were two miracles performed that night. The first miracle was that Jesus turned ordinary water to wine. The second miracle was that the wine was not an ordinary wine, but the sweetest wine at the wedding, making the people believe that the wedding couple saved their best for last! The wine that was first served was considered the best until the wine from Christ arrived. This shows that even that which we think is good will not be able to compare to God's best! The Word of God says, "Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" (Ephesians 3:20) therefore God will do more than we've asked for.
Are you aligned with God? We must play our role in ensuring that God's best for our lives is not delayed because of the condition of our heart or because of our disobedience to God. We know that "all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us ( 2 Corinthians 1:20) therefore what God has promised, He will fulfill. We can trust that He will do His part and make all things beautiful in its time; the only unsure thing is our own faithfulness. If we are waiting for God best in whatever area of our lives we are praying about, let us be waiting because it is not yet God's time, not because God is waiting for us to get right. Start being dependent on God and start walking in obedience to Him. God is saving your best for last and it's almost time for it to be released.
