Girl Talk #3: Remember My Name

Two saturdays ago I started the Girl Talk series which focuses on areas of a young woman's life that I feel are often overlooked. The first week I talked about being the Ms. Independent Christian Woman and last week I discussed the issue of Cleaning Out the Friend's List. (You can click on each link to catch up on the series). Today I want to discuss the importance of having a legacy and a good name. The Bible tells us that, " a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold."( Proverbs 22:1) Whether we acknowledge it or not, every day we live is another page added to the autobiography that we are writing about our lives and every birthday is like another chapter in this book. The question is, "when you are done writing your autobiography, will it be worth reading?". More importantly, will God want to publish your autobiography? The Holy Bible contains amazing biographies of many great women, but two women have a Book named after them: Ruth and Esther. When you study both women and both books, you find out that these ladies were radical for the things of God. Ruth, even after the death of her husband, disregarded tradition, forsook her gods, and boldly told Naomi, "Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me." ( Ruth 1:17). When Esther realized what was about to become of her people, she  asked her people and servants to fast and pray then she stood on faith and boldy declared, " And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!" (Esther 4:16). Both women were willing to do the unthinkable and venture into unknown places solely based on their trust in the God of Israel. How do we become these women? What are the things we should be doing now to ensure our names are not only remembered, but remembered for good?

1. Get Over the past
"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things  have become new. "

The biggest lie the enemy can tell you is that you have messed up too badly and have gone too far for God to use you. As a child of the Living God we must remember that the moment we came to into the knowledge of Christ and surrendered our lives to Jesus, all that we've ever done or could ever do were and has been washed away by the Blood of the Lamb. Your past cannot stop God from using you unless you refuse to let it go. The Word of God says, " as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12) meaning from God's perspective, your past never happened. When He sees you, He only sees the Cross where His love for you was perfectly displayed. This may seem too good to be true, but the Bible proves that God means it when He forgives. If it was not true, Rahab, the woman the entire nation  knew as a prostitute, would not have been chosen by God to be part of the linage of David and ultimately Jesus Christ. (Matthew Chapter 1). Wherever you find yourself right now and at whatever age you are, let go of your past and who you USED to be, and be determined to seek Christ. God is the only One with whom mistakes can become testimonies.

2. Eat Good Fruits
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. "- Galatians 5:22-23

Before God can publish or publicly endorse you, He must know that you bear good fruits. As women, we have the grace to minister to anyone because everyone entered this world through a woman. Think about the attributes God deposited in a woman: the ability to nurture, to sympathize, to comfort, to help, to love deeply, to cherish, to value, to calm, to amend, etc. etc. All of these attributes can only be displayed when we bear those fruits of the Spirit. The Bible says, "it is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop than in a house shared with a contentious woman"(Proverbs 25:24). God has not called us to be what people know as "the contentious woman", but the woman whose presence brings peace and laughter and whose speech is filled with grace and seasoned with salt. However, we cannot just wake up one day and become that woman. These characteristics are ones that have to be cultivated. We must make a conscious decision everyday to be less of ourselves and to reflect more of God, a decision to forgive quicker, a decision to show more compassion, and a decision to, like Ruth and Esther, walk the path God has before us even if other women aren't heading in that direction.

3. Stop Being Average

"Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all"- Proverbs 31:29

The names of average people are never remembered and there is no reason to write a book about the life of someone who lived an average life, did average things, and had no real distinguishing factor. In the same vain, the names of duplicators are not remembered either. You do not win the Nobel Prize for duplicating the work of someone else, but you win one for excelling in your chosen profession and being the first to discover what was not known or never understood before. God is searching, not for the daughters that have done well, but for the daughters that have excelled. Before God being average is like being lukewarm, neither hot nor cold and God has made it very clear that He prefers us to be either driven and on fire for Him than dabbing just a little bit into the things of God and remaining in the world. The woman that does well says grace over a meal, but the woman that excels knows that prayer is a weapon and chooses to fight her battles on her knees. The woman that does well goes to church because it's Sunday, but the woman who excels knows she can experience the presence of the Lord all week long. The Lord wants to call out the ministry in you from this very stage of your life so allow Him to ignite you that you may work excellently in His kingdom. Paul, who was not even part of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ, said that by grace he worked harder than them all ( 1 Corinthians 15:10) and that is the spirit of excellence God wants out of His daughters. The world may be thinking you are "doing the most", but how can we really do the most for a God that has done it all? There's always room for improvement so refuse to settle for the present knowledge of God that you have and aim to know Him more and deeply. That's how your name is remembered before God for His Word say, "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men". (Proverbs 22:29)

One thing that is certain is that one day we will have a book review of the life we lived, but this review can go well if we consciously make the decision to work for our name and our legacy. People will remember your name, but God is concerned with what our names will represent. Imagine God redid the world using our present day lives and gave the new world a new Holy Bible. Now imagine a Pastor standing before a congregations and saying, "Turn with me  to the Book of *Insert Your Name*, chapter one". Lord I pray, help us to live in such a way that the book of our names be worth reading and learning from. Amen.
